iART is art experienced through personal computers and smartphones.
- The “i” is the “i” of individual.
- The “i” is the “i” of internet.
- The “i” is the “i” of interactive.
- The “i” is the “i” of intangible.
- The “i” is the “i” of immanent.
- The “i” is the “i” of introverted.
iART is not art that exists only in the extraordinary space of museums and exhibitions. It exists within everyday life, appears on the screen at hand, and is experienced each time it is opened.
If hare, in Japanese folklore, refers to extraordinary time represented by festivals and rituals, and ke refers to the repeated time of ordinary life, then iART is an attempt to move art from the place of hare into the time of ke.
In painting, subject and object face one another. In installation, the subject is enveloped by the object. In iART, the object is contained within the subject.
The screen of a personal computer or smartphone is small. But this smallness is not merely a limitation. The work is in the palm of the hand, and the viewer faces it at an extremely close distance.
iART is not magnificent fireworks. It is a sparkler held and watched alone.
iART is not large-scale entertainment like a full-length novel or a film. It is a short-short story that appears in the gaps of everyday life and leaves an afterimage within a brief span of time.
Yet it is not simply smaller, shorter, or simplified. Through clicks, time, chance, and repeated visits, it emerges each time as a different experience.
iART can be experienced anytime, anywhere. And that “anytime” and “anywhere” becomes the “now” and “here” that exists only at the moment it is opened.
iART permeates everyday life, and quietly enriches it.
- “i” は individual の “i” である。
- “i” は internet の “i” である。
- “i” は interactive の “i” である。
- “i” は intangible の “i” である。
- “i” は immanent の “i” である。
- “i” は introverted の “i” である。
Notes on iART iART
The following notes outline several medium-specific qualities of iART.
1. Uniqueness
Works experienced through personal computers and smartphones lack the authority of being “here” and “now,” which Walter Benjamin called aura. They can be opened repeatedly, from almost anywhere.
However, this lack is not only a weakness. “Anytime” can become “now” when the time of the work overlaps with real time. “Anywhere” can become a new “here” when the work appears within everyday life.
2. Interaction
iART can change through clicking, input, selection, time, and repeated visits. The viewer is not only someone who looks at the work from outside. The viewer can become someone who changes the state of the work.
The work does not simply present itself to be viewed. It emerges through the relationship between the work and the person who experiences it.
3. Bodily Experience
iART does not have the scale of a large painting or installation. The screen is small and flat, and its size is not fully controlled by the artist.
Yet this smallness can become a medium-specific strength. The distance between the eyes and the screen, the movement of the fingers, and the sense of holding the device create an art experience that is extremely close to the body.
4. Self-Luminous Screens
iART emits light by itself. Unlike painting or sculpture, which are seen through external light, the screen of a computer or smartphone produces the light through which the work appears.
For this reason, iART can be experienced in darkness. In darkness, the outline of the device and the surrounding everyday world recede, and only the image and time inside the screen begin to float.
This darkness is different from the darkness of a movie theater and different from the white cube of the museum. I think of it as a black room for iART: not a large architecture that separates the work from everyday life, but a small darkness that lets the screen quietly appear.
iART is not fixed to an authoritative place. It appears within everyday life as something close, small, repeatable, and yet different each time. Through the self-luminous screen, it opens another small space within the dark.
